New York CityMango AuntiesMango aunties are the older Latinas who set up card tables on the street corners and sell baggies of pre-sliced mango that is fruit flavored crack. One of the signs that summer has truly arrived in NYC is when the mango aunties appear. These women are up before dawn, buying mangos at the wholesale markets. They set up at their corner on a folding stool, and spend the day peeling, slicing, and bagging. The baggies fly off the table as fast as they can replenish. It was three bucks when I was there, and you selected your own baggie. I got good at the New York move of flashing three bucks, dropping it in the shoebox, and grabbing a bag of mango as I walked by. And they know how to pick the good mangos. You want to know why your groceria doesn't have such great mangos? These women are getting to the wholesaler ahead of you and picking them out. Don't worry. Once summer is actually here, there's one on every street corner. Seriously, there was a mango auntie set up on each tower the day I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. I ate so much mango. |
