013: Barking Station

Yes, the name was deliberately chosen so that the Woodland Mansion could be two stops past Barking. While it’s decommissioned now and out of circuit, it’s still a nice enough place to visit. This was my first experiment with glass walls for a station, and I think it went pretty well. The location was chosen as being the most likely spot on the route, and required a bit of leveling. As with many of the stations, the redstone blocks that drive the minecart launchers are integrated into the wall, with the launchers themselves hidden behind the dispatch boxes in this shot.

Layout is nothing unusual, and of course the Imperial banner must be flown. It doesn’t have the usual flanking torches because of the glass wall, although I’d only have been blocking a view of the dirt the other side of the glass. There’s a village not too far away, but it’s literally over the river and through the woods, and a bit of a pain to get to. I thought about building a road to it, but still haven’t done much with the villages, other than build a road through one. We’ll talk about that with the north road up to Cliffside at some point. That was the point where I started thinking of the paths I was building as Roman roads, and the idea of the Empire of One began to percolate. But you’re here for the Woodland Mansion, so let’s move on.

I left the native stone in place as much as possible, and glassed in from the outcrops in the back and side. The floor is mostly diorite because that’s what was there. I used andesite for the roof to match the native stone and because I had a lot of it piling up. The glass walls and the heavy stone roof may or may not work well, given their relative visual weights, I’m still not sure about that. Yes, there’s another yellow bed. I told you had a bunch of yellow wool and was putting it to use. The view in the morning is usually really nice, although waking up to a burning zombie standing on the other side of the glass wall is a bit disconcerting. That happened more than once.
