The Last Geomancer

The author acknowledges and respects the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. I recognise the diversity of Aboriginal people and the importance of land, culture, and heritage to the Elders and their communities. This story hopes to show how a European diaspora might walk with the Aboriginal community in parallel on a “Two Ways” journey of cultural and knowledge exchange, and mutual support in time of adversity. Thank you to the Catalyst Foundation for the original wording of this affirmation.

This is a work of fantasy, but the political opinions, context including Aboriginal (Wito Meyunna, now known as Kaurna) and Cornish (Kernewek) culture and history, and damage done to marginalized and Indigenous communities are very much real. Sometimes it’s easier to hear hard truths wrapped up in the sugar coating of a fairy tale. Just ask the Brothers Grimm about that. And now that you know the sort of story and viewpoints you’re in for, on with the show..

Where there’s a mine or a hole in the ground
That’s what I’m heading for, that’s where I’m bound
So look for me under the lode and inside the vein
Where the copper, the clay, the arsenic, and tin
Run in your blood and get under your skin
I’m leaving the county behind, and I’m not coming back
Oh, follow me down, cousin Jack
